Mario Berry Named Spelman College Chief Information Officer and Vice President Share a Spelman College Press Release

Mario Berry - Head Shot (web)ATLANTA (March 20, 2017) -- Mario Berry has been appointed vice president and chief information officer for Media and Information Technology at Spelman College, effective May 1, 2017.

As CIO, Berry will provide leadership in building and supporting the College's information technology infrastructure and business processes in support of teaching and learning. He will also assume responsibility for providing training opportunities for faculty, students and staff in new technologies that enhance teaching and learning. Leading an IT organization that seamlessly integrates Spelman’s academic and enterprise functions, Berry will be responsible for deploying technology in support of the College’s educational mission, including incorporating future innovations to enhance academic excellence. He will also be tasked with using technology to align the College’s business and operational functions in support of students, faculty and staff.

“With more than 16 years of information technology experience, including 13 in higher education, Mario Berry brings an impressive depth of knowledge to the College,” said Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D. “He will be integral to our goal of using technology to enhance the educational enterprise which includes converting classrooms to active learning environments; creating our Innovation Lab as a campus-wide resource and makers space; implementing plans to increase the size of our computer science department; planning a new facility that integrates the arts more fundamentally into science and technology; and finding ways to enhance the technological skills of students, faculty and staff.”

During his career, Berry has led organizational transformation through the strategic adoption and management of IT solutions, as well as navigated and resolved enterprise-level governance issues. He joins Spelman after serving as the associate vice chancellor, Enterprise Applications, at the Lone Star College System in Houston, Texas. Previously, he was executive director of technology services at several Lone Star campuses and assistant chief information officer and director of systems support at West Texas A&M University.

A native of Houston, Berry received a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from National American University while serving in the U.S. Navy. He obtained a master’s degree in management and computer information technology from Regis University, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in educational leadership and management at Capella University.
