Active Learning Opportunity Energizes Campus Community as Physics Department Hosts Eclipse Viewing

August 2017

To underscore Spelman's commitment to active learning opportunities, the Department of Physics transformed the BDT Suites Amphitheater into the largest classroom on campus when it hosted a viewing of the total solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21., from 12-3 p.m.

The College's faculty, staff and students marked the moment and astronomers dubbed "The Great American Eclipse" because it marks the first time the phenomenon has occurred in the United States from coast-to-coast in nearly 100 years.

While Atlanta is 40-80 miles outside the center-line path, campus spectators observed an approximate 2 minute and 41.6 second partial eclipse.
